Therapeutic advance gained from lipid-lowering agents, anti-hypertensive drugs, and anti-diabetic oral agents have acted as invaluable tools to reduce the heavy burden imposed by cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors on public health. Despite this evidence, cardiovascular diseases still remain a major cause of death in many countries in the Western World whether due to inappropriate control of diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and the smoking habit1, or by the emergence of new risk factors such as abdominal obesity2, reduced levels of HDL-C, hypertriglyceridemia and higher proportion of small and dense LDL particles3, all recognized to act as contributory elements for cardiovascular risk as a whole.

The Role of the Endocannabinoid System in Managing Cardiometabolic Risk (Part II): The Cardiovascular Consequences of Abdominal Adiposity and Cannabinoid-1 Receptor Blockade
The current global health threat posed by abdominal obesity is largely attributed to an excess of intra-abdominal adipose tissue. Recognized now as an important endocrine organ, intra-abdominal adipose tissue is highly metabolically active and correlates closely with metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular (CV) disease. In a previous issue of Cardiology Scientific Update, the role of the end...
متن کاملEndocannabinoid system--a novel target for cardiometabolic risk.
The endocannabinoid system (EC) plays a significant role in appetite drive and associated behaviours. Therefore attenuation of the activity of the EC system would have therapeutic benefit in treating disorders that might have a component of excess appetite drive or over-activity of the endocannabinoid system, such as obesity, ethanol and other drug abuse, and a variety of central nervous system...
متن کاملStudy the Effect of Endocannabinoid System on Rat Behavior in Elevated Plus-Maze
Introduction: Previous studies have shown that cannabinoidergic system is involved in anxiety. However, there are controversial reports in the experimental studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of pharmacological stimulation or blocking of CB1 receptors and inhibition of endocannabinoid degradation in anxiety like behavior in elevated plus-maze (EPM) test in rat. The EPM is o...

متن کاملSystems Risk Analysis UsingHierarchical Modeling
A fresh look at the system analysis helped us in finding a new way of calculating the risks associated with the system. The author found that, due to the shortcomings of RPN, more researches needed to be done in this area to use RPNs as a new source of information for system risk analysis. It is the purpose of this article to investigate the fundamental concepts of failure modes and effects ana...
